The first impression recipients have of your mailing is the address. For that reason, list stylization is a preferred process so that capitalization and punctuation be correct and consistent.
List stylization is all about standardization: upper and lower case, hyphenation, and prefixes and suffixes. Our proprietary software searches and replaces values as directed; ensuring consistency and correctness. Several examples of this might be to add a period after a middle initial, or remove unwanted data that is part of a data element, such as Mr. and Mrs., or the trustee for:, or CLOSED account, etc.
Making it a priority to use list stylization will have your addresses include proper and consistent capitalization and punctuation, which is the mark of a true professional. Material that looks as if a child has addressed it (perhaps missing proper punctuation or lowercasing first or last names) is not going to impress anyone.
We program our list stylization software to amend a number of fields at once. Upper, lower, upper/lower and punctuation fields will be flagged as appropriate; prefix and suffix fields will be standardized and validated using special tables; and hyphenated names will be flagged to ensure the letter after the dash is capitalized.
Here is an example of data which has not been styled:
